I wouldn’t have made it if I stayed. I would’ve become another statistic that often gets plastered across news reports and examined in psych studies.
But at the tender age of 13, I knew nothing about those reports and studies. All I had was my faith and an overwhelming sense that I needed to leave. So, I packed a bag and forged my way into a world that wasn’t for pre-pubescent girls with pigtails to navigate on their own. But it was better than the “home” I left.
Becoming my own caregiver meant overcoming my inadequacies as a child in the world. It meant building mental frameworks that ensured that I not only survived the environment I left but thrived. But sister, I would be lying if I said it was all easy. I wrestled to discover the stain of unconscious thoughts and ideas that my old environment left on me.
My Identity was rooted in my performance and service to others…
I was so busy climbing ladders and trying to meet everyone’s expectations that the deep-seated dreams and desires I had, packed their bags and left too. Then when the last of my 5 children left home, I was left with the revelation that I didn’t know who I was outside of motherhood, work, and marriage. I had been so busy fulfilling expectations that I became a functional shell – showing up for others but neglecting myself.
I had to elbow my way past notions of selfishness and guilt to tend to my desires. I stooped in the dirt to water the parched soil of my soul, pull up the weeds of chronic self-sacrifice and began the journey of becoming the woman that God created me to be. This committment, freed me up to soar in one of my biggest desires, building businesses and spaces to support women like you.
I’ve done my work, now I’m available to help you do yours!
